Tampa Police Fire Top Brass After Retirement Deal Crumbles Into Legal Battle

Assistant Chief Ruth Cate

TAMPA, Fla. – The Tampa Police Department has fired Assistant Chief Ruth Cate on Wednesday, ending a high-level standoff that began with a quiet retirement offer and escalated into allegations of retaliation.

The move comes just over a year after Chief Lee Bercaw promoted Cate to the executive role in February 2025. According to department officials, the relationship soured last Friday when Bercaw and the city’s Employee Relations Manager sat Cate down to tell her she was being let go. As an at-will employee, Cate was informed she had failed to meet the expectations of the job.

Because Cate had 29 years on the force, the department said they initially cut her a break. They agreed to let her retire and burn through her accrued vacation time instead of facing a formal firing. She was supposed to break the news of her retirement to her staff this past Monday.

The plan fell apart when Monday arrived. Rather than stepping down, Cate claimed she was being retaliated against and revealed she had hired a lawyer. The department immediately shifted gears, putting her on administrative leave while Human Resources looked into her claims.

By Tuesday, the situation intensified. Cate and her attorney met with HR to lodge a new set of complaints. While the City of Tampa says it will review those allegations through its standard procedures, officials made it clear that the new claims wouldn’t save her job. The department moved forward with her formal termination on Wednesday.

“The Tampa Police Department remains committed to fairness, professionalism, and the equitable treatment of all employees,” Chief Lee Bercaw said in a statement.

He added that the agency has enough qualified leaders to handle the transition without interrupting public safety.

Hey. Here's a tip. The Cowardly chief waited until assistant chief Cate left on a pre scheduled vacation to fire her. Ask him why....is that how he previously made arrests? Did he wait until the wanted person was immobile on a hospital bed to place handcuffs on them. Is he scared of A.Chief Cate?

.. smh .. not surprised.. crickets about what happened... Everything she got away with was brought to light and it got brushed under the rug after
